The "Kedushat Levi" – Defender of Israel | 1740–1809

Introduction

Among the great disciples of the Baal Shem Tov and the successors of the Maggid of Mezeritch, the figure of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev stands out especially – the man known as the "Defender of Israel" and the greatest lover of the Jewish people of his generation. His book "Kedushat Levi" has become one of the most beloved and studied Chassidus books of all generations.

His Life

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was born in 1740 in the town of Husiatyn in Poland. He studied Torah under the great scholars of his generation, and at a young age was drawn to the path of Chassidus. He was a devoted disciple of Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg and of the Great Maggid of Mezeritch – the great successor of the Baal Shem Tov.

After wandering through several communities, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak settled in Berditchev in Ukraine, where he served as Rabbi and Admor until his passing in 1809. Berditchev became an important Chassidic center under his leadership.

"Defender of Israel" – His Love for Every Jew

The most prominent characteristic of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was his boundless love for every Jew. He was famous for always finding merit in every Jew, and never allowed anyone to speak disparagingly of the Jewish people in his presence. Many stories tell of how he would "argue" with the Holy One, Blessed be He, on behalf of His people Israel, demanding mercy and justice.

The most famous of his prayers is the "Dudele" – a prayer-song in Yiddish in which he addresses the Master of the Universe directly and demands redemption for His people. This song is heard to this day in synagogues and Shabbat meals around the world.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak passed away on the 14th of Tishrei 1809 in Berditchev. His gravesite has become a pilgrimage destination for thousands of Jews every year. His book "Kedushat Levi" is studied in every Chassidic home, and his Torah on Ahavat Yisrael continues to warm hearts to this day.
